Engine build

Wondering
|
What would be the issue to build a John Deere 414 for this class. Leaving the stroke at 5.00 and increasing the bore to 4.75 making the cid 531. I know you can take a 466 to 4.78 bore to get 531 but an 8.1 would be 540 if you go to 4.75 bore. So I believe 540 is too big. Anybody ever look into the 414 or is there a problem with building one of those for pulling. |

Should have put in my post for the NTPA classic super stock class. |

Don’t do it

You do what you want, but the 414 or 6.8 is not the most rugged setup.
I don’t remember the bore spacing, but I don’t believe 4.75” is doable and have enough iron left to keep the block together. 4.19” is stock bore. It has no cam bearings in the block, some had the first one like a Cummins. Small main bolts, small head bolts. |

I don’t think you have the correct stroke for an 8.1, I’m pretty sure it’s 5.0 too.
Agree that 414/6.8 doesn’t have enough bore spacing for 4.75. |

8.1

8.1 does not have a 5 in stroke nor does a 9.0 from factory |

John Deere 8.1L is 4.5625" bore and 5.06" stroke from the factory.
John Deere 9.0L is 4.66" bore and 5.35" stroke from the factory. |

So how much percentage are you allowed over the 531 CID limit according to the NTPA. |

I'm not sure it was a great idea but I spent the last 12 months building a 6.8 , we will find out soon enough if it all works. |

Isn’t that just a 404. Why not start with a 466. |

Never mind 404 is 6.6. So how did you get to 531 with stroke I assume. Seems most say you can’t go to 4.75 bore because cylinders are too close. |

Right now it's still stock bore and cubes, it's not a ss engine, more of an enhanced farm. No there isn't room for 4.75 bore , taking advantage of the crossflow head and seeing how it does. Line bored for cam bushings, and lots more . Feel free to call me 610 five eight seven 8372. John |
