John Deere 404 overbore September 10, 2023 10:51AM
Let’s talk sbjd displacement. I have a 404 in a 4630 and am looking to go bigger, I know a 466 swap is probably the most logical choice but what are some maybe not so logical options with the 404? I saw a 404 block for sale advertised as 505 cubes using cat liners and pistons just curious how big I can go either using factory stroke or a mildly longer stroke. Thanks guys I run JI Case’s but am helping a friend with this green rig

the 466 would be the best way to go. You can bore a 404 and run 4 3/4" pistons and I believe you can stroke them out to 585 with the 4 3/4" bore. You can also run an 8.1 motor but they are probably harder to find and more pricey.

I forgot to mention this engine will be going in a farm stock/hot farm tractor so I’m not looking for any crazy cubes, thanks for any input

I think you would be surprised by how many running in your class will have big cubes.

Bore spacing for the 404 and 466 block are the same so bore potential are the same. Might be a little tough fitting as much stroke as the the 7.6 with a crank driven oil pump but the 404 and early 466 are basically the same casting.

404 has to be bored for 4 3/4. 466 the 4 3/4 liners will drop right in.

Yes, or you could bore the 404 to take 4 7/8” pistons and sleeves; the 466 block has to be bored to go to that size as well. Then you’re at 531 ci with stock stroke

Where can you get those sleeves and pistons and can i do it in a 4020 block?

You have to bore a 4020 motor to get 4 3/4 liners in it. The ones I did used 5010 pistons but this was with a stroked crank. Not sure anymore how the compression height would work out. I think with these pistons you have to bore the rods for larger wristpin. I think we bought liners from power bore cylinder sleeves. Some guys run cat pistons but I believe these are also usually used with a stroked crank. Cant remember anymore.

If you wanted 4 7/8 pistons you would probably have to have them made and last set of custom pistons we bought was around 4,000.00.

Some guys used to use the 3306 cat pistons ( 4.75” bore) with stock stroke on a 466 to make a 505; or with a Stroker crank and ih rods to go 585, but the pistons require machining still and wrist pin to rod fitment needed work as well. By the time you bought new pistons and had machining done you could probably have a new set made . All engine builders usually sell piston/sleeve kits

we had a 404 out of a 4320 at 585 ci, 4 7/8 ross pistons and a 5 1/4 stroke, with deere rods.
