so i'm starting to plan a build. I have an jd vs ih question. I know that the ih has a longer bell housing that gives the tractor more natural wieght on the nose. does jd have a rear end and transmission that is similiar? something like a 560 rear end. i'm wanting to build a tractor thats weigh in the 5500# range. |

I have an idea, since God knows we don't need anymore Internationals or John Deeres. Be someone that can think for themselves and build a Massey, and maybe for fun throw a perkins V-8 in it. Boy that sounds like fun. |

Your weight might be an issue with a JD. 4010 is a great starter for building, but it would be some what heavier. In on your plans we don't know what kind of class you are talking about. Need a little more info. |

You can get a 4010 down around 5500, depending on what equipment, class, and set-up you are running. |

I'm thinking of the 404 block with a single charger setup. My question is does Deere have a tractor with a longer center section like an IH? Is the 2940 any longer than a 4010? |

Should still catch close to that weight with a 404 single charger. Depends on how much you strip it, two vs. three bar cage, and how much aluminum you are prepared to use, and what tire/wheel combo. What you see in my picture is about 5300-5400 empty with a similar engine set-up to what you mention, but it is possible to get lighter than that yet if you set your mind to it.
Good question on the length vs 2940. I don't honestly think there is much difference, but have never measured them. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/25/2010 03:42AM by FarmersFun. |

I'm wanting to build a light limited super stock. Probably a spark plug engine. JD makes a 359 block thats in the 2940. What kinda a crank is in that motor and do you think it will live? |

7 mains - not sure how much counterbalance it has...
There is a tractor running very hard in East Central MO with the 359 on alky with 2 chargers. Mike Savey & others ran it on diesel. The 359 is the same as the 329 with the exception of sleeve / bore diameter. Who's LLSS are you looking at? |

You could also use the 2940 or 4030, not sure on their exact weight. What is your cube limit? Deere also made the 414 engine. |

I'm limited to 370 cubes. I'm leaning toward the 359 block cause i hear it has a really good head on it. I just wish jd made a light tractor with a longer center section. Thanks for all replies. The advise is appreciated. |
