2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 07, 2010 03:10PM
Farm Stock 504 Case 1175, 2500 RPM, ported heads, Crane cam, 425cc A pump. Max inlet is 2.3. Have a stock 3LM-466 now, but need improvement. We are allowed to slug any turbo. What would be a good choice? Thanks

how about a 2.6x2.8 s300 or a hx50/hx60 thats a 2.7x3. The 505 cummins uses a hx40 but not sure on the measurements of it.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 08, 2010 09:10AM
You might want to take a look at the HX40, I am pretty sure it is 2.3" comp, unsure of turbine side. If not, slug the HX50 down.

Just curious, but how would an H1E Holset compare? Would that be a turbo that would work in this instance? Anyone have the intake/exhaust sizes for an H1E?

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 08, 2010 02:17PM
Most hx40 and H1E's are 60mm..

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 09, 2010 09:08AM
60 mm = 2.36"

That's pretty darn close!!

Sorry FF.. I missed your post with the size you listed... (I like the slugged hx50..) Diesel truck guys were breaking the 40 shaft.. back when lots of people were trying them.. (a fair towing turbo in a cummins.) Most have gone to some S300 base turbo..

Yep, you're right about the diesel truck guys and breaking the shaft an HX40's. Not sure what level you can run one to and have it still live. Most Cummins pick-up guys I have talked to love the s300 based Aroura charger.

I would agree with slugging down the HX 50, though.

A H1E is 2.37 x 2.67 i think , use an #22 exhuast housing on that big of cubes and that rpm limit. They were used o L10 cummings i believe. I ve used it on smaller motor with open rpm very reliable turbo. hx50 would have to have a 17 ex and still might not stay lit.hope this helps

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 09, 2010 03:36PM
So you think the H1E would be a better choice than my currrent 3LM? Thanks for all the replies.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 10, 2010 10:56AM
I dont think so, a 3lm is 2.3x2.75 If youre wanting something bigger you wouldnt want to go to a H1E. I would say HX 50 or H2 .

ACLLSS puller, are you sure this turbo came on a L10? The L10 is larger than the 8.3L and it used the HX40, I thought the L10/M11 used the HX 50.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 10, 2010 12:06PM
Reason I asked, is because I have easy access to an H1E. It is for a 8.3L CDC (Cummins) in a CaseIH combine.

I thought the turbo limit was 3LM-466 out of the box stock for NNPAI? Or do you have something else you are working on? But then you wouldnt be the only one in that class that "bends" rules

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 10, 2010 01:19PM
What are you running for a turbo now? It would not be worth switching from a 3lm to an H1E. As in toolz application, that would be too small of a turbo, there would be no change. A 3lm is 2.3x2.75. You can have them made into a 2.5x2.75 but if you can run the bigger H2/HX50, the price is real comparable for the bigger holset charger and much more power. Even the S300 switzer used on the 8.1L deere engines is 2.6x2.8, I think the ones they use on the dodge pickups is smaller than that.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 10, 2010 01:34PM
I have a out-of-the-box 3LM-466, which is still the limit for NNPAI in the 3000 RPM class, on there now. I wasn't sure on the exact size of the H1E, hoped maybe it was bigger, then I could justify picking it up cheap & setting it on my shelf, or bolting it on for a non-association pull. Guess I'll let it continue to sit on the shelf & collect dust for now!

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 11, 2010 04:58AM
On the Deere S300's.. they used a hand full of different size wheels... (and exhaust housings) I have had 12-15 of them, and the largest is about a 64mm... (I pretty sure there is a 2.6 one out there.. I just have not seen it.) You should be able to pick up a used one/a take off/ rebuilt one for a fair price.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 11, 2010 05:51AM
H1E is much more efficient than a 3lm, just a better turbo!

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 10, 2010 10:36PM
Ran a h2 on a fairly stock 504. Ran prettty good, actually liked it better than the 3lm. 3lm came out of hole easier but h2 carried the middle and end of track better. It was not plugged down to 2.3 though. Don't know how that would work for you.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 11, 2010 01:21AM
Ive been running the h1e off the 8.3 cummins military engine. It is a slotted charger and intake measures around 2.36-2.4 and the exhaust is around 2.5. I ran the turbo for 3 years w a foot tall flame out of the stack running around 450hp on a 361 340cc w/o water and finially had the shaft seal go. I payed 790 for it brand new off the shelf and got a lot of passes on it. Hard outa the hole but will carry 3rd gear w 18.4 38s.

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 11, 2010 02:49AM
The 3LM is easy to get moving with- an advantage with a straight 8 speed, but I think I could use more down track. I would like to try a HX50- probably would need the smallest exhaust housing I could find, and would like to use a removeable slug so I could pull elsewhere if I wanted to. I have a new HX55 with a damaged intake cover, but it has too big of an exhaust housing. Are small HX55 housings available for it, possibly with a T4 mount? Thanks again

Re: 2.3 turbo limit- what's best? November 11, 2010 01:34PM
It should have the T4 mount, I know they make a #19 exhaust housing. I've even heard of a #17. It may be cheaper to call someone like area diesel and buy a reman with the right housing and use the 3lm for a core.
