301 AC vs. Ford 401, IH 407 etc. June 26, 2011 01:03PM
Been looking for a Ford 8000/8600, etc for an 8000lb modified farm stock class, 3100 rpm, 410 ci. limit but haven't been able to find one yet that was worth the money. Some are saying the the AC 301 will compete well with the over 400 ci. crowd of the Deeres, Fords and IH's. If you punch them out, is this true. From working with some 301's in the past, I know they can pull some power, but that was in the pro stock classes. I am an orange blooded fellow, but hate going to the pull 100 cubes short. Thanks for the thoughts.

I've seen them run good with the under 410ci tractors but that was open rpm so i dont know how a 301 would do in a rpm limited class against bigger cubes.

It's tough to run a 301 Allis against the Fords, Deeres, Internationals, and anything else for that matter with a single turbo - no matter what the cubic inches are on the 301. There are some large cubed 301's that run well, but on there best day they won't quite run with the other brands that are tuned well - at least at the present time. The 3100 RPM limit may be in your favor (vs. open RPM) due to the limited cylinder head on the Allis. It really depends on your class rules / restrictions when competing well against other colors.

The big equalizer is a twin staged turbo system with the 301 cubic inches. This of course is with the same inlet size on the ambient turbo that everyone else is restricted to. Works well.

What is your inlet restriction size?

The inlet size is 2.75", single turbo.

Good point. If they would allow you to decube a 426, that may be a less costly alternative. A D-21, 210, 220 can get to 8,000 lbs with out too much trouble if you had to stay with the larger chassis to run the larger engine.

What are the injection pump rules??

I didn't think that a 210 or 220 could go down to 8000lbs, with the heavier castings in the rear end. I always thought that they were about 1500lbs heavier to start with. I can decube a 426, as long as I submit to a cube check each season, which I am fine with. The problem is finding a D21 chassis to start with. I hate to take a good one and strip it down, as they are collectible, and getting somewhat harder to find. Robert, I figured that someone would pick up on me not mentioning the Deere!! We have to run the original fuel system.

Kevin, If you can decube definitely find a D_21, we can help you with cam, as far as pump it should be legal to run an m-100 series off an 80 series tractor??? If not we have a guy who can build a heck off a 450 roosa. If you go with the 301 punch it to 404cid, use jd pistons ,st85c cam(vogel) and a H1E holset with 19 or 22 exh. housing. Upgrade tranny with 6-6 1/2-6 5/8(use coupler for direct only and install these gears in 2-4-6 (1-2-3)slots with good clutch.hope this helps.

If you can decube Parker Bros that pull in the vintage were trying to sell me a 220 a while ago. They might still have it.
