So with the 666 what is the strongest gear to pull in. I am currently pulling in 4th. I really cant remember how the gear stack sits, Is the 4th gear close to support on the countershaft? Would I be better off changing ring and pinion and pulling in third?

Thanks for the information guys. So I assume that the 466 head flows much better than the 404? and it will bolt to the 404 block? We are trying to be in the 1000 to 1200 hp range with a single charger.

I need some information on SB JD engines. Is it possible to make the 404 engine run as good as the JD 466? And if so what has to be done. Is the 466 head and block superior or just bigger cubes? What has to be done to the head to make it flow better? I assume porting, I assume bigger valves. Who is the shop that all the Greenies go to for good stuff?

I agree with the forging being stronger. The forging process uses HUGE pressures to form the base shape. The compression of the semi fluid steel bonds the sturcture and (as jim mentioned) makes the grain flow with the contours of the base shape of the crank.

This is just a poke in the dark, because I do not know the facts. Would the Utility 460 have faster constant mesh gears than the rowcrop tractor?? Or just a different ring and pinion?? And are the 460 gears interchangable with the 666 gears

Billet is the block of steel that the crank is cut from. As opposed to a cast crank that is pored from molten steel. Billet usually is a block of rolled steel. the rolling process removes the grain structure that is in cast steel. The grain structure does not bond together as well as the laminar structure of the billet.

I am putting together a IH diesel 301 for a friends antique puller 460. It will run in a 3000rpm class, The pump (Roosa) is opened up as far as it can go. The injectors have larger tips. The class is also speed limited to 6 or 8mph. The engine is basically stock, decompressed about 1pt. Stock precup injection. The head has been ported just a bit,and higher ration rockers. I have a cha

a good magnetic sensor tach should be easy to do, Autometer has some. Just have to locate a magnet on the damper or flywheel. OR you can use the stock 966-1066 tach drive on the front pump cover and a stock tach.. Kinda depends on how many rpm';s you are gonna turn..

Time to redo a 806 DT361 engine.. What is the most practical way to go larger CI. Stroke or BORE??? Simple would be better
This is running a 3000rpm class and does not have to have over 550 HP

As the engine drops rpm the exhaust side pressure is not enough to keep building more intake pressure. The intake pressure being more than the exhaust pressure makes the turbo reverse direction (in the worst case) and this makes the chirp or "turbo bark" sound. You have to understand that this reversal happens to a system that is rotating in excess of 100,000 rpm's
This tends to b

This is one of the problems I see with a all voulnteer track crew, No body really knows how to properly maintain a pull track. The scraper operator has to be both smart and quick to do a good job.

This is really quite a sad thread, the passion that we all have or have had for this sport is almost great enough to cut. Some of us (ME especially) have found it difficult to keep spending money that is harder and harder to come by. The current economy has forced me to make a decision I didn't want to make. My interest in pulling is just as strong as it always has been but a brush with

Never said I "Hate pullin" I still pull when time permits, there are other interests in my life that are as important if not more. If you took time to read the original post you would understand that this is a legitimate question and this is the site to discuss it.

Simple REALITY is what made me lose interest, Wound up with a great Quad my wife and I ride 2500 trail miles a year. Hours and hours of rideing some of the best trails in the Western US. This opposed to a 15 second blast down the track on the puller.

Personally I would start with a 706 and a 466 and keep on building year by year until you are threatened with divorce, this is usually a stopping point that makes sense for us.

TOO DAMNED funny. Both tractors are excellent machines, each has great traction. There is a difference in sq inches per pound of weight and how effectively they turn in difficult conditions. The green tractor has a good engine, the Red tractors engine is used in many many applications sucessfully. Which is better? I could not answer that. Although I would assume a tractor that is 5000# hea

I would agree with about 20-25 psi. It does depend on your fueling rate and exhaust temps. I set mine to start at 20 and goes right to full delivery. I set volume so I get a miss and white smoke at 1800rpm no load.

One of the real beauties of tractor pulling is that it makes you use your head for something other than a place for your hat. If done properly pulling is a "thinking mans sport" I would recommend getting a rough idea by observing your fellow competitors, then making a guess and hope that you are close. Take notes if you have to, this can be helpful if you pull on several tracks that have

The 666 I am involved with had a NASTY bounce towards the end of the track. Would throw you out of the seat. I run a 20.8X38 radial and started to add air pressure, Got to 22psi and the bounce stopped, I also found that the clutch pedal return spring was too light and when the first bounce happened the pedal would move enough to disengage the clutch. HD spring helped a lot also... Goo

Club membership can be very difficult, us pullers all seem to have strong personalities and this can be a problem. Our local club is not going through some of the worst growing pains I could imagine. A few that think they have all the power have made decisions for the rest of us and told lies to gather support. This is a bitter pill and I hope we don't destroy the club over it. Hope y

If you look at the production numbers of the 4430 v the 1066 you will find that IH built MANY more 1066's than Deere 4430's. Also the availibility of the 400 series engine in trucks, combines and tractors make it very easy to find a good engine for the IH. The LaGod family has as much to do with IH popularity as anything IMHO He was the guy that really started to manufacture great p

It is nice to have a "starter class" that those of us with shallow pockets can afford. One of the things that is not considered is how the starter classes often have some of the competitors move up to the higher HP classes. This is really good for the sport of pulling.
