Pulling safety history questions - 7 months ago
Were steel flywheels required when NTPA formed around 1970? If later, when were they required? Was there a specific accident that led to the rule in the same way Lester Henson's accident in '76 led to the fender rule or the Randy Rose/Walsh accidents in '97 and '98 led to the rollcage rule? Bonus ? - was there a specific imcident that led NTPA to mandate wide front endsby The Original Michael - Forum
Re: What is lost with electric vehicles from a fan perrspective - 7 months ago
Quoteroadkill Some enterprising person will bring in an electric powered tractor by 2030. May only be as an exhibition unit but it will happen... I had thought of that. Based on current technology, that would require a lot of lithium to be able to pull a sled down the track. One aesthetic thing that will lose fans imo is whether racing or pulling, the vroom-vroom factor is lost. Motorsportsby The Original Michael - Forum
Re: Allison Mod Combinations - 7 months ago
In the 1980s several guys ran turbo allisons, most prominently Gardner Stone with a triple turbo allison. Wayne Longnecker ran a tough twin allison with turbos in the early to mid 90s. Gardner said in an interview that turbos make lots of power but they also make lots of parts. He probably got tired of going through so many parts when he built the turbine tractor.by The Original Michael - Forum
What do you think pulling will look like in 2030? - 7 months ago
Do you think pulling will generally look like it does now in 2030, or do you think major changes will occur that will make pulling shrink or otherwise change alot? I wonder how demographics will change the sport, along with costs and everyone wants their own class to fill every possible weight, turbo, or engine size niche. As an example, when I was a child, lots of land in the counties surrby The Original Michael - Forum
Re: What is one thing your club or assoc could do better???? - 7 months ago
Going by comments on here from NTPA level down to small local clubs, I'd say never pass a rule if you aren"t prepared to enforce it, and that means for everyone from your point champion down to the pay per hook guy that only runs with your group once a year.by The Original Michael - Forum
New non-tractor class, and safety issue - 7 months ago
Ocala from a different angle The above video is a different view of Ocala. Two points: 1) Watch at 5:55 in the video. Could this be the precursor to a brand new class? Would this be a popular class for pullers and/or fans if adopted? 2) A totally different view of the Mary Kehl's hook starting at 7:10. Here's my concern- when the mini breaks from the sled, look at the ground spby The Original Michael - Forum

QuoteS'no Farmer Supertiquer, Basically everyone, Mike told me that the ring that failed was on the chassis when they bought it and that they never really looked at it thinking it was what it needed to be. Doc Riley - 7 months ago
Doc, my understanding is you grew up in Nebraska, and joined NTPA approximately 1989. I'm curious how your involvement in pulling started? How did you get your first announcing gig? What do you consider the greatest honor in your involvement in the sport? Also, didn't you have some involvement with a Nascar tv show in the 1990s? What did you think of the Nascar side of motorsportsby The Original Michael - Forum
Re: Amount of classes - 7 months ago
QuoteTomah winner I see a lot on here about people saying there are too many classes in pulling these days, and I agree. Let's start by eliminating COMBO CLASSES! If you have a light pro, run light pro. If you have a 4.1, run 4.1. Eliminate light pro/limited pro combo. If you run PS, run PS. If you run SS, run SS. Eliminate SS/PS. If you run a hot farm, run a hot farm. If you run 85 LPS, runby The Original Michael - Forum

NTPA rule making process: How would you improve it? - 8 months ago
What things do you think would improve the NTPA rule making process (this isn't about any specific rules, it's about the process)? What about the process is broken in your opinion and what would be good steps to fix it? I'll ask one thing for insiders- If NTPA is the sanctioning body, why should WPI have any say at all with competition rules? Isn't WPI supposed to be the fiby The Original Michael - Forum

With the understanding this is moot for most modern mph classes where the speed is tracked on the sled with the air horn, for classes with an actual pace tractor, which do you think is the better rule: A) The pace tractor takes off when the pulling tractor starts moving and moves at a consistent 4,5,6,8,10 mph (whatever the speed limit is) for the entire pull, or B ) The pace tractor keeps pby The Original Michael - Forum
How driving strategy changed in MPH classes with tech development - 8 months ago
Years ago in the pace tractor era, the pace tractor moved at a constant 6 or 8 mph, or whatever the limit was for the class. The pace tractor was supposed to move at a constant pace. Many drivers laid back, then nailed the throttle in hopes that they would catch up to where the pace tractor was near the end of the run. In modern days, that doesn't work. MPH is tracked on the sled, so guyby The Original Michael - Forum

Re: Don Nolan?? - 8 months ago
Quotemh49 It is Diesel only today because of this tractor. When the rule for Diesel only was put into place, Fool's Gold was making some Hp gains with a limited but smart dollar spend. I think the NTPA was afraid that somebody with unlimited funds would come up with a dominate gasoline tractor and they wanted to avoid the whole Diesel vs Alcohol Super Stock mess. Just a couple, a mod and SS Bruce Hutcherson. In 1980 or so when the 4-rodeck Makin Bacon Special came out, he was able to run all 4 classes. I remember being surprised he could run the 7 with 4 big block blown engines. First time it got loud? - 8 months ago
When I was a boy, a 5-engine blown hemi tractor was unheard of. Twds weren't a thing and minis were mostly carbureted small blocks. However, to a kid even a twin n/a mod back in the day was loud compared to the 4020 dad farmed with. Has this ever happened? - 8 months ago
This would go back to the early days if it ever happened, almost certainly before the mid 1970s, but did a tractor ever run as a modified or SS for a while, and at some point got converted to the other? Also, weren't some early twds basically repurposed single engine mod chassis?by The Original Michael - Forum
