I remember him well. From Frankford, Mo. Think he started with an IH-H with small block Chevy. I mostly remember the stretched IH-M with big-block Chevy he called Phantom-396. Almost unbeatable during the early 1970's. Think he went to Louisville at least once, maybe more. Do you have any Pictures??? Pictures from those years are hard to come by. Great guy, visited with him many time

I have seen many outstanding pulls over the years. Relived some of them through the stories above. But the heart stopper for me has to be in the early 1970's on a Saturday night, 15,000# Pull Off between Don Nolan on his big M-M and Al Arnold and his A-C 220. Don Nolan pulled first and made a clean smooth straight pass. The flag was set. Al Arnold hooked and started his run. The close

When I was grade school age (1950's). A trip down my 12 mile long country road you would see a full time farm family every quarter mile. That number would be closer to two now. Homes are empty or torn down with no trace of a family working together to survive. A few new homes, on a acre or two, that are seen now, belong to full time town job workers that just want to feel a kinship to th

I need to get more scanned. Camera quality was not so good those days. Attended a lot of pulls with no camera???? Wish I had more pictures but in those days I spent more time swinging weights or watching track conditions.

The stand out memory I have of Don was the Illinois State Fair. Not sure what weight class. They were pulling on the grandstand side. Anyone that has ever been to a pull there knows what that track was like, no one could hold their tractors from pulling right toward the grandstand. Midway through the class Don spotted the sled up next to the grandstand and make a picture perfect pull straight

May have some in old trunk that I need to look through and scan. I do remember him with single engine and later a twin engine Hot Rod that he sold to someone in Monmouth, Il. He was from Northeastern Illinois, not to far South of Chicago right?

I am not an engineer but what I think is; a drawbar height can make some giant differences in tractor pulling. An over length drawbar could make some difference. But a short drawbar it seems to me would hurt your chances of making your best pull! (Just saying?)

NASCAR regulates (with an iron hand) every part, nut, bolt and screw. The cost of running a team is still somewhere out in space. Limits are necessary but will never suit everyone. Open or unlimited classes will always draw the most attention from the fans. Limited classes level the playing field and hopefully lower the costs for those wanting to compete. I enjoy all levels, but that's

I would agree on the 70's. More of the build your own going on. Didn't take a million dollar operation to compete. Much more fun for the Puller's and Fan's. Have to admit the safety aspect is much better now!

Bill Voreis might be a little higher? 6 consecutive championships, an undefeated season. Who can match that?? Boyer family from Illinois for state ranking. They were there for the beginning of modified tractors, finished with the Diggin Dozen. Hook count off the chart!
