We've all heard people say how we wish there had been more photos or videos of tractor pulling 30, 40, 50 years ago. Be glad that future generations won't have to say those things, because we have people out there taking the time to photograph and record pulling events, and promote the sport in ways we'd wished we had back then.

The problem I had with the 5x20's is that the spray angle was incorrect, when it would get to lugging hard, it would start to pop and belch fire out the stack as it popped, then it'd fall under the turbo. Fought that for too damn long. Finally put a set of 4 hole nozzles in from Fair Valley, and it made the tractor happy & run like it should have been.

I had 5x20's in my 407 for years, it ran, but not quite like I wanted it to. Got a set of 4x24's (I think) from Fair Valley years ago, it woke that tractor up & made a whole new animal out of it.

You can put a resistor inline between the sensor and the plug in, which will make it read less than what it actually is, which is why many groups dictate that the sensor wire must be exposed, for easy viewing, from the crankshaft sensor all the way to the plug in at the rear of the tractor.

From what I've seen, everyone seems to do it a little differently, so there's several ways to go about it. I've seen guys lengthen the hoods a lot, and I've seen guys shove a 466 in there while leaving the hoods alone! Some guys use the original 06 series framerails, others use the 66/86 series framerails. There's really no right or wrong way to do it, but some do look

Parts for one are few & far between. There's a few shops that can rebuild the turbo, provided the shaft, wheels, and housings are okay. Oil supply was obtained by removing an oil galley plug near the oil filter & routing a line to the turbo, oil was returned by either tapping the front cover above the injection pump for a hose barb & returning it there, or removing the pump timing cover pl

I added a 1/2" of stroke to my 407, makes it a torquier engine. Takes some work to get it to swing past the camshaft.
I'd say once you know what your timing is truly set at, you'll have a good idea where to go from there.

Yes, timing a Roosamaster and an A pump are different, especially if the Roosamaster still has it's advance mechanism. I've had good luck with about 25 degrees timing on my A pump DT407.

Got a pyrometer on it? What is your timing set at? If it's coal black, it's fat on fuel, you're snuffing it. The 361/407 heads have good airflow characteristics, they really don't need ported or opened up much until you go really big turbo or high RPM's.

I have a DT361 I'm in the process of rebuilding. I don't agree with your "old mechanics" advice at all. The best way to do it is get a hold of the hydraulic pump & ram, and the tools to properly pull the old sleeves & press in the new sleeves. You want one for an '03-'07 Dodge Cummins. Get an aftermarket two-piece one from like ATS or something like that, as you will have to do a little grinding to get the bolt holes to line up. You can also get an aftermarket one in a larger T4 flange like the larger 400 series IH manifolds.
